Sweet Daddio has decided we’re going to re-do the kitchen this summer, like, totally. So we went to Lowes and looked at cabinet options and flooring options and countertop options and lemme tell you what, I am not gettin’ none-a them expensive-assed granite countertops. No.no.no. Not only do they cost 5 times what I’m willing to pay, you break a dish whenever you drop it. Formica it is, because I can get exactly what I want, how I want it, when I want it, for the price of a weekend at the beach not including food. If I get bored of it in 5 years, I won’t get all squirrely about replacing it. Black Formica. That’s how it’s going to be. On maple cabinets, seeded glass fronts on the uppers. Maybe. Maple for sure, I love the color, but the design is still up in the air.
We’re thinking hickory flooring. That will go in last, to see if we have enough $$ to floor the entire downstairs at the same time. We can always do the floor later on.
The walls, that are this appalling grey and mauve wallpaper from the ’80’s, will be stripped of all wallpaper abomination and covered with the Eddie Bauer Crimson paint from Lowes. It’s a nice red, intense and leaning very slightly toward the brickish type of red. It looks good with the maple and the hickory.
SD wants to build a hutch to go where the wall ovens and cabinet are. It will be a free standing looking piece of furniture, about 4 feet wide, big enough to make a home for the microwave and the coffee maker. Shelves above, cabinets below to store small appliances. I may paint it a color- cream perhaps, that will look good with the maple, hickory, and crimson. Not black, tho, because the appliances are all black.
It’s not like I’ve been dreaming about this, you know. I’ll be sure and take plenty of before and after pictures.
I have a maple butcher block table in the kitchen, I’ll paint the base to match the hutch, or maybe black like the appliances and countertop. I don’t have to decide this minute…

I just tagged you for a Quirky MEME!
No pressure if you don’t wanna, of course. But I’d love to read about Rootie-quirks!
If I didn’t know better, I’d say you were avoiding mentioning NEW OVENS!!!!! NEW, BIG OVENS!!! What are hickory cupboards when you get to have NEW OVENS!!!
I’m a bit happy for ya, I am.
Whoo Hoo!! Yay!! New kitchen!
How very exciting.
Can’t wait to see the pictures!
Oh I didn’t mention the oven concept. I’m getting a dual fuel range with a downdraft so I don’t need a hood or anything up over the cooktop. The oven is convection, which I had in Auburn and absolutely loved. The despised 1967 Harvest Gold wall ovens will be given to the Museum of Ugly and Obsolete Appliances in Lansing, Michigan. Not that I’ve been thinking about this for a while, or anything.
I like the colors you picked out. You should do a before and after picture!
