Because it really is personal…

I’m back now

I see that WordPress made a few changes while I was gone- and without even trying to consult me!

The last leg of the trip, from JerseyChick’s, Georgia to Statesboro saw me driving Little Martha and #3 driving the truck I inherited. I won’t go into any embarrassing detail, let’s just say I have more silver in my hair now.

Of course, that could be from the dealings with my 95 yr old grandmother. We went directly to her apartment at an assisted living facility from the airport, to find her in the bathroom, hemorrhaging to an alarming degree and the staff just sort of flapping their hands wondering what to do. We called an ambulance, and at the hospital she got 3 pints of blood and 4 liters of fluids, they found 2 intestinal gastric bleeds and repaired them, and she’s feeling much better now. An inauspicious start, to say the least.

Her house is all packed, she gave me instructions to “take anything you want”, so I now have her extensive collection of needlepoint pictures, pillows, a fireplace screen, and Christmas ornaments, as well as her 12 place setting of Franciscan Desert Rose dishes. It’s hard not to feel a little like a vulture about it all, but she has no need for any of it, and is really happy that I wanted it.

The drive home was…wet. It rained on us pretty much the whole way. We took I-40 from Amarillo to Little Rock to Memphis, then dropped down. The other route would have us through Dallas and Shreveport, but they were having nastier weather, so we opted for steady rain over tornadoes. It’s pretty through Oklahoma and Arkansas. Stuff was blooming, and the open fields with rolling hills is pleasant. I recommend you drive I-40 sometime.

I am glad to be home. Sweet Daddio isn’t home from work yet, and I am anxious to see his big hairy self.

Welcome ‘home’! Happy to hear you all survived the adventure. (Scary about your grandmother – aren’t the staff in those places supposed to be, I don’t know, trained to handles such things? Very scary.)

yeah, about the staff. Dad had a stern talk with the director. I’m not asking for an RN 24/7, just someone on staff with *at least* basic Red Cross or EMT training. Grandmother now has a personal sitter 12 hours/day, who’s got some medical training (LPN I think). The facility has our permission (like they should need it) to call 911 if she even has an attack of the hiccups. Grandmother really likes it at that place, and doesn’t want to move, so we’re doing what we can to keep her there and still have adequate attention to her health care. In their defense, it is not a nursing home, just an assisted living place, and the people there need minimal help, usually.
