Yesterday’s post got me thinking, and the creative juices are starting to warm up. I’m gonna make myself a dress. yes I am. It’s been several years since I’ve done any really creative sewing, partly because the pattern sizes frustrate me and aprtly because I simply can’t find something that suits my style.
Well, This morning, I got online and started looking and by golly I found a dress pattern I like, in my size, that I might even wear. Not only that, I found a fabric I like (having worked in the fabric/textile industry, I know my fabrics so can go by a description rather than touchy-feely in a store), in a color I approve of, that will look good with some shoes I already own. I hate shopping for shoes.
I haven’t decided whether to make the wrap one or the zip-up one. I’ll put sleeves on it, but not the buttoned kind. I’m thinking the non-wrap version would be cooler, especially if I give some ease in the bodice. If I like one, maybe I’ll make both. The kirt will be not as long as the long one, but not as short as the shorter one. I’m funny about my legs.
It was gratifying to find a pattern for a dress that satisfies several desires at one- modesty, a full skirt (love those!) with kind of a 1930’s style. I chose a carnation pink (LOVE that color! so nice with a summer tan) linen blend fabric, which will look nice with my existing white sandals.
Maybe, if I absolutely adore the pattern, I’ll go down to Savannah and hunt me up a summer print of some sort.
Y’know, I do love wearing dresses. Being girly and all. It’s fun, and here in the Deep South, it’s practical in the summertime.
I guess I’ll need to hunt up a pattern to make a cotton slip or two as well.

Wrap dresses are always the most flattering. This sure is pretty! I think it would be especially nice in light blue (not that you asked ;)). Send us a picture when you get it finished! I made pajamas once, in the 7th grade, for home ec. class. I think that was the last time I tried sewing anything. It takes a whole lot of patience that I don’t have!
Whenever there’s someone with my build featured on What Not To Wear, they put her in a wrap dress and it looks great. My only issue is having something close to my skin like that in our hot sticky summers.
